SAMR Model Lesson Plan

SAMR Model is a framework used to assess the integration of technology used to assess the integration of technology into education. It stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition, representing different levels of technology integration from basic to high level of ICT integration. The SAMR model, developed by Dr, Ruben Puentedura, offered a structured approach to integrating technology into teaching and learning process and practices, under substitution technology is used as a direct tool to substitute traditional tool with no functional change. Under Augmentation technology adds some functional improvement to the task, enhancing its effectiveness. Under Modification technology allows for a significant task redesign, enabling new possibilities that were previously inconceivable. Under Redefinition it represents the highest integration of technology where it enables the creation of new tasks and knowledge.

Reflection on SAMR Model

As per my understanding SAMR Model is essentially a planning tool that helps to design better learning activities for students developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura that have four degrees which includes substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and the Redefinition. Through the SAMR Model I taught the concept of types of transportation where I used the substitution and augmentation degrees in the lesson plan to enhance learning for the students. One thing I felt after using the SAMR Model lesson plan was that this model is more effective in primary grades compared to the TPACK Model and the two degrees of substitution and augmentation is most relevant in primary grades compared to the higher two degrees. I also knew that through this model students will have longer retention and more interest in learning compared to the normal lesson plan we make. Furthermore SAMR model is associated with Blooms Taxonomy and the as future teacher I can see myself using SAMR Model especially the two degrees of substitution and augmentation being used mostly to make my teaching more effectively, I was unaware that I was already using the basic level of ICT Integration in teaching and learning but after I knew about SAMR and the other Model I will use the learnings to integrate middle and higher level of ICT Integration. Therefore, SAMR model is very essential when we teach the primary kids to enhance both teaching and learning process.

ICT Integration Model- SAMR Model

Design the lesson plan for primary children with two levels of SAMR model integration

Lesson No: 1

Teacher name: Tashi Bumpa

Subject: Types of Transportation

Class: VI

Time: 45 Minutes

Teaching Learning Materials:  , Google Docs, Powerpoint, Video link, Animation, digital tools. Text book

ICT Model: SAMR model

Previous Knowledge: They learned what is meant by transportation.

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, student will be able to;

  1. define the types of transportation precisely after the discussion,

  2. write three examples of different types of transportation correctly after the activity,

  3. share two important aspects of transportation in our daily life correctly after the discussion.

Lesson Introduction (5 Minutes)

I will grab the attention of the students and start my class with an energizer from Youtube. After that I will ask the students how they move when they move from one place to another. What are some ways they move from one place to another? I will let the students think for a while and I will let two to three students share their opinion. After that I will share my experience and finally introduce the topic.

Lesson development (30 minutes)

Information input

Then I will elaborate on their points and provide definitions and introduce the types of transportations using a video from Youtube.  Click here I will gain attention again and using google docs I will ask the students to create a KWL Table and ask them to fill the first two columns. I will provide time to fill the table and after that explain the concept of types of transportation.

Activity 1

For this I will let the students watch the animation of the types of transportation and in small groups they find at least three examples of the types of transportation from the animation. After that I will provide questions from the animation to check their understanding of the concept taught using mentimenter. click here

Activity 2

Then I will let the students write in the google docs two importance of transportation in our daily lives in pairs and using google classroom and camera I will let the students share what they wrote in the google docs to present it in the form of interview recording videos using camera and sharing it in the google classroom.

Follow up activities

I will ask a few pairs to share their experience and I show their videos to the class. After that will write and comment feedback on the google docs they wrote to check their answers.

Lesson closure

To finally conclude my lesson, I will give  few questions in the google classroom as homework to the students
